A kingdom of ice, Spitzberg is the main island in the archipelago of Svalbard where polar bears reign and are masters of all they survey. This archipelago is situated about 650 kilometres to the north of Norway and is only 1000 kilometres from the North Pole. With a surface area of 39,044 km2 it measures 280 kilometres from north to south and is between 40 to 225 kilometres east to west. The Norwegian Sea borders the south, the Greenland Sea to the west and the Artic Ocean to the north.

With rocky peaks rising to 1700 metres covered in snow where it’s dark for two and a half months.

Devoid of any human habitation for a very long time, this archipelago today if home to 2400 inhabitants who live in two main settlements: Barentsburg, a community of 400 Russians and Longyearbyen, a town populated by 2000 Norwegians. Longyearbyen is the administrative centre of Spitzberg.

This expedition has no chalet or refuge as its headquarters. The difference to this journey is that you will live aboard an authentic 56 metre sailboat, which will cast anchor each evening near fjords with breath-taking views of summits and neighbouring glaciers as they plunge straight into the waters of the Artic Ocean!

This trip requires a good level of ski tourers that are in search of new discoveries. Sometimes maritime, sometimes alpine, close to the polar bears that will follow the progress of the boat, this journey allows access to the ski tourer to some of the most beautiful scenery of Spitzberg. A truly once in a lifetime arctic freeride experience in an unspoilt landscape.

Our boat, the Rembrandt was originally built as a herring lugger. The vessel was rebuilt as a three-masted passenger sailing schooner in 1994 and sailed in Spitsbergen (1994 – 1996) and in Galápagos (1998 - 2001). The vessel underwent a complete rebuilding and refurbishment program in 2011.
The vessel measures 56 meters in length (168 ft.), 7 meters in width and has a draft of 2, 5 meters. The ship can accommodate a maximum of 28 passengers in 14 twin cabins. The general interior public areas include a spacious restaurant area so that all meals can be taken together as well as separate bar area and reading table area. There is room to relax, read and socialize.
The ship is well suited for expedition cruising among small islands and offers excellent open deck viewing areas, even when under sail.
The communication and navigation equipment has been completely renewed in 2011 according to the latest SOLAS regulations.

This ski touring adventure starts from our floating basecamp, our 2 masted sailboat. Once on the boat the expedition begins with a journey that will take place mainly in the sheltered waters of the fjords. The boat will cast anchor every evening in the harbour of the fjords to ensure protection from the swell and a good nights sleep.
Each morning the crew takes us in RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boat) to the shore. From there we put on our skis to begin our magnificent ascents. Most of the time we return by a different route from the way up. When it’s possible we ski down the other side of the mountain into a different fjord where our boat will meet us.
Every evening the program for the next day is decided, depending on the conditions of the snow, the weather but also what you want to make sure you get the most from your holiday.
The vertical change is between 600 and 1100 metres to reach the summits of the mountains. For the more keen, a second summit or a traverse of a pass is possible in the same day.
The groups will be made according to ability and physical condition. If during an ascent someone feels they cannot make it and wishes to return to the base, it is usually possible, especially if there is a spare guide or we are still in sight of the boat.
All hikes start at sea level. So besides suffering from a party the night before no one should suffer with headaches from altitude sickness!
